FLOOD DAMAGE COST ASSESSMENT, NEWPORT, WALES
For: Newport City Council and Gwent Consultancy - 2002
Newport CC, in response to continuing objections from the Environment Agency that are compromising the urgent regeneration needs of Newport, commissioned a major review and design proposals for an integrated flood defences Masterplan for all of Newport. This entailed an extensive cost-benefit appraisal and NPV analysis of all existing floodable properties, culminating in an economically justifiable integrated flood defence system. Proposals will be taken forward to the National Assemble for Wales for future funding.
NATIONAL SCOPING STUDY ON STRUCTURE BLOCKAGE AND AFFLUX AT HIGH FLOWS

Supervisory consultant advising the lead consultant, JBA, on various future avenues for research with regard to the modelling and assessment of hydraulic structures causing failure through overtopping or blockage. Principal inputs will relate to quantifiable risk assessment methods to improve performance failure prediction.
BLOCKAGE RISK ASSESSMENT, PAXCROFT BROOK, WILTSHIRE

Paxcroft Brook has been the subject of increased summer flows from new development, and the watercourse passes through a confined 200 m long culvert at its downstream end. Concern was raised about blockage risk on this structure, and its safety implications. A statistically based risk evaluation study was carried out using methods evolved by the consultant to identify the probabilistic risks of blockage, the most likely causative factors, and to advise on improved safety design and an improved maintenance programme.
R&D PROJECT ON STRUCTURE BLOCKAGE RISK ASSESSMENT

A study was commissioned to provide interim guidance on how best to consistently predict and mathematically model debris blockages at river structures. In association with Kennedy and Donkin, Brian Faulkner acted as the river modelling and risk assessment consultant to the project. The output included a national standard for blockage modelling procedures in Section 105 studies, a sophisticated blockage prediction tool on spreadsheet, and guidance on risk assessment applications. The software was produced and distributed on CD-ROM. Job Sheet available - 1018
